FAQ - TELEPHONE RECORDERS
What is Voice Activated recording?

What is Line Activated recording?

Which is better, Line Activated or Voice activated recording?

How can I hide a phone recorder?

What is Voice Activated recording?

Voice Activated or Noise Activated recording is based around recorders that can pause and un-pause based on hearing enough noise. The individual recorder's volume control also is it's sensitivity in recording mode. When the recorder "hears" enough noise it will un-pause and begin recording again. It is completely based upon noise, not voices per say. Generally speaking it is a good starting point to set the recorder at about 80% volume. From there it can be adjusted pending the recorder recording too much or not enough.

What is Live Activated recording?

Line activated recorders are looking for voltage changes on the phone line. When an extension is picked up the resting voltage of a phone line drops. When that happens the recorder un-pauses and resumes recording. When all the extensions are hung up, the voltage goes back up, and the recorder goes back into a paused state. Also when the extensions are not in use, the recorder draws some rudimentary power of the phone line to keep it going. This saves on batteries as the recorder is using the phone line to power itself in the paused state.

Which is better, Line Activated or Voice Activated recording?

In our opinion, Line Activated recording is a far better way of recording. Line Activated recording is instant start and stop. It happens the instant any extension is picked up. Noise Activated recorders may take as much as a second to un-pause again. Also, Voice Activated recording is subject to "clipping". If there is a large lull in the conversation a Voice Activated recorder may go into it's paused state. As it un-pauses, it may miss the first half or full word. The last real drawback to Voice Activated recording is: battery life. A Voice Activated recorder is always on. It must be on to be actively "listening" for noise. Line Activated recorders all but turn themselves off and draw some basic power off the phone line itself. Line Activated recorder's batteries last about 1 tape, which may be several weeks depending on phone usage.
